Thank you to the many, many supporters of this project who have aided us in seeking details about Ruth Lowe’s life. Thanks also for spurring us on when the walls threatened to hold us back. Some facts seemed lost to history, but through patient investigation and great assistance, we were able to re-build old files.
Castle Carrington’s star Editor, Margot Wilson, performed a wonderful, and speedy, editing job and I can’t thank you enough. You make this book look superb, Margot.
Work on this project could not have been completed without the good friends and Beta Test Readers who gave of their time to help determine if we had a worthwhile book on our hands. Fortunately, their responses were keen for “Until I Smile At You.” Thanks to each of you, especially for catching those typos!
And also, to the many people interviewed for this book: thank you so much. Your stories—and your preparedness to share them—make this a resourceful and inspirational treasure.
I had a wonderful time talking with author James Kaplan on March 7th, 2016. His biographies, Sinatra: The Voice and Sinatra: The Chairman are treasure troves of information, published by Anchor (part of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group). James and I talked at length about Sinatra, Dorsey, and, of course, the mastery of Ruth Lowe. Thanks, James, for allowing me to reproduce parts of our discussion and quote from your books in order to broaden the story.
My thanks also to Mark Steyn for his appraisal of the Dorsey/Sinatra recording covered in “I’ll Never Smile Again” featured online and in his book, A Song For The Season published by Stockade Books.
The late Peter Levinson revealed facts about Tommy Dorsey in his book Tommy Dorsey: Livin’ In A Great Big Way and I thank his publisher, Da Capo Press, part of the Hachette Publishing Group, for their permission to cite passages.
Dave LeBlanc is a talented journalist working for the Globe and Mail newspaper. Thanks, Dave, for allowing us to reproduce part of the wonderful column you wrote, “A ‘Healing’ Return to the Home of Songwriter Ruth Lowe.”
Thanks also to Cynthia Gasner for permitting us to reproduce part of her column from the Canadian Jewish News.
And to Amanda Erlinger, Nancy Sinatra’s daughter: thank you so much, Amanda, for helping us secure that wonderful photo of your mom and grandfather that we used in the Foreword.
Cheers,
Peter Jennings
