ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The New York Times Book of Crime reflects the expertise of a whole range of the newspaper’s talents, stretching back to its founding days when many of them toiled anonymously without bylines. I tip my hat to them and to the tradition of excellence they created and that we hope to build on today.
Though I’m listed as the editor, my partner in all of the work was Susan Campbell Beachy, my tireless researcher. Her good judgement is reflected in the quality of the articles she recommended for inclusion, and her way with words is evident in the many annotations she crafted.
Our work was overseen expertly by Alex Ward, the editor who shapes the books created by The New York Times, and Barbara Berger, the executive editor at Sterling Publishing who took a special interest in our project and pushed it to be even more ambitious than we first conceived.
Richard Price was wonderfully generous in agreeing to provide a foreword that brims not only with his voice, but also with his deep understanding of crime and criminals and the people who chase them.
Evan Sklar and Darcy Eveleigh were photo editors whose devotion to capturing the right images is apparent in the book’s many compelling pictures. Jeff Roth, The Times’s photo archivist, was also essential in that effort, as was Phyllis Collazo, who arranged the photo clearances.
At a point where the sheer magnitude of crimes that cried out to be included in the book seemed overwhelming, Constance Rosenblum, an editor of rare talent, stepped forward with a sharp pencil and a sharper eye to trim and, in many cases, improve articles so that the richest variety of material could appear in these pages.
The experience I brought to shepherding this work was largely honed during my years at police headquarters where I learned much from the fine reporters who worked alongside me, including William K. Rashbaum, Al Baker, C. J. Chivers, Michael Cooper, Kareem Fahim, Jodi Rudoren, Lydia Polgreen, Kit Roane, Elissa Gootman, Michael Wilson, Richard Lezin Jones and Shaila Dewan.
Finally, there are many who never seek bylines but whose work fosters a project like this, making it more beautiful, more accessible to readers and better known to the public at large. I am most grateful for the work in this regard done by many people at Sterling Publishing, including Senior Art Director (interior) Chris Thompson, Cover Designer David Ter-Avanesyan, Senior Art Director (cover) Elizabeth Lindy, Editorial Director Marilyn Kretzer, Publicist Ardi Alspach and Production Manager Terence Campo; and, at Tandem Books, Ashley Prine and Katherine Furman.
