Translation
1. ἐπίστευσα, διὸ ἐλάλησα, καὶ ἡμεῖς πιστεύομεν, διὸ καὶ λαλοῦμεν.
2. ἐγὼ ἐβάπτισα ὑμᾶς ὕδατι, αὐτὸς δὲ βαπτίσει ὑμᾶς ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ.
3. καθὼς ἐμὲ ἀπέστειλας εἰς τὸν κόσμον, κἀγὼ ἀπέστειλα αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν κόσμον.
4. Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω καὶ εὑρὼν (after finding) αὐτὸν εἶπεν· σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;
5. λέγει αὐτοῖς ὅτι ἦραν τὸν κύριόν μου, καὶ οὐκ οἶδα ποῦ (where) ἔθηκαν (they laid) αὐτόν.
6. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν (to preach) ἐν τῇ Δεκαπόλει1 ὅσα2 ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς.
7. λέγει αὐτοῖς· ἔρχεσθε (come!) καὶ ὄψεσθε. ἦλθαν οὖν καὶ εἶδαν ποῦ (where) μένει καὶ παρ᾽ αὐτῷ ἔμειναν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην.
8. Ταῦτα ἔγραψα ὑμῖν ἳνα εἰδῆτε (you might know) ὅτι ζωὴν ἔχετε αἰώνιον, τοῖς πιστεύουσιν (those who believe) εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ.
9. Καὶ συνάγονται οἱ ἀπόστολοι πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν3 αὐτῷ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησαν καὶ ὅσα ἐδίδαξαν.
10. πολλοὶ ἐροῦσίν μοι ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ· κύριε κύριε, οὐ τῷ σῷ4 ὀνόματι ἐπροφητεύσαμεν,5 καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δαιμόνια ἐξεβάλομεν, καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δυνάμεις πολλὰς ἐποιήσαμεν; καὶ τότε ὁμολογήσω (I will say) αὐτοῖς ὅτι οὐδέποτε (never) ἔγνων ὑμᾶς.

15. καὶ ἔγραψεν Μωϋῆς τὴν ᾠδὴν8 ταύτην ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ καὶ ἐδίδαξεν αὐτὴν τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραήλ.
16. καὶ ἐλάλησαν αὐτῷ τὸν λόγον τοῦ κυρίου σὺν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ.
17. ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι (to save).
18. πάντες γὰρ αὐτὸν εἶδον καὶ ἐταράχθησαν (they were troubled). ὁ δὲ εὐθὺς ἐλάλησεν μετ᾽ αὐτῶν.
19. πάτερ δίκαιε, καὶ ὁ κόσμος σε οὐκ ἔγνω, ἐγὼ δέ σε ἔγνων, καὶ οὗτοι ἔγνωσαν ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας.
20. νῦν δὲ ζητεῖτέ με ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill) ἄνθρωπον ὃς τὴν ἀλήθειαν ὑμῖν λελάληκα (I have spoken) ἣν ἤκουσα παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ· τοῦτο Ἀβραὰμ οὐκ ἐποίησεν. ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν. εἶπαν [οὖν] αὐτῷ· ἡμεῖς ἐκ πορνείας οὐ γεγεννήμεθα (we have been born)· ἕνα πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν θεόν. εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· εἰ ὁ θεὸς πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἦν ἠγαπᾶτε ἂν9 ἐμέ, ἐγὼ γὰρ ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐξῆλθον.

1. The “Decapolis” is the region of the “ten cities” to the east of the Jordan. It was a Gentile area as you may have guessed from the fact that it is a Greek name.
2. This word is used in many different contexts. Sometimes you cannot stick to the as great as/as many as definition too closely. The NIV translates, how much.
3. ἀπαγγέλλω, I report.
4. The adjective σός, σή, σόν means your in all its forms, much like ἐμός always means my. σός occurs 27 times in the New Testament. The word occurs repeatedly throughout this passage.
5. προφητεύω, I prophesy.
6. φίλος, -η, -ον, beloved, friend.
7. ἧς has been attracted to the case of κυρίου. It “should” have been dative since it is instrumental.

9. ἠγαπᾶτε ἂν means you would love.
