1:5 Καὶ ἔστιν αὕτη (this) ἡ ἀγγελία1 ἣν (which) ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard) ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀναγγέλλομεν2 ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι ὁ θεὸς φῶς3 ἐστιν καὶ σκοτία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν οὐδεμία (none). 1:6 Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν (we say) ὅτι κοινωνίαν ἔχομεν μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τῷ σκότει (darkness) περιπατῶμεν (we are walking), ψευδόμεθα4 καὶ οὐ ποιοῦμεν τὴν ἀλήθειαν· 1:7 ἐὰν δὲ ἐν τῷ φωτὶ περιπατῶμεν ὡς αὐτός ἐστιν ἐν τῷ φωτί, κοινωνίαν ἔχομεν μετ᾽ ἀλλήλων καὶ τὸ αἷμα Ἰησοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ καθαρίζει5 ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας. 1:8 ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἔχομεν, ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) πλανῶμεν6 καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν (us). 1:9 ἐὰν ὁμολογῶμεν (we confess) τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν (our), πιστός ἐστιν καὶ δίκαιος, ἳνα ἀφῇ (he/she/it will forgive) ἡμῖν τὰς ἁμαρτίας καὶ καθαρίσῃ (he/she/it will cleanse) ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀδικίας. 1:10 ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι οὐχ ἡμαρτήκαμεν (we have sinned), ψεύστην ποιοῦμεν αὐτὸν καὶ ὁ λόγος αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν.

2:1 Τεκνία7 μου, ταῦτα (these things) γράφω8 ὑμῖν (to you) ἳνα μὴ ἁμάρτητε (you might sin). καὶ ἐάν τις (someone) ἁμάρτῃ (he/she/it sins), παράκλητον9 ἔχομεν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα (father) Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν δίκαιον· 2:2 καὶ αὐτὸς ἱλασμός10 ἐστιν περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν, οὐ περὶ τῶν ἡμετέρων11 δὲ μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ περὶ ὅλου12 τοῦ κόσμου.

2:3 Καὶ ἐν τούτῳ (this) γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἐγνώκαμεν (we have known) αὐτόν, ἐὰν τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν. 2:4 ὁ λέγων (one who says) ὅτι ἔγνωκα (I have known) αὐτὸν καὶ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ μὴ τηρῶν (is keeping), ψεύστης ἐστὶν καὶ ἐν τούτῳ13 ἡ ἀλήθεια οὐκ ἔστιν· 2:5 ὃς (who) δ᾽ ἂν τηρῇ (he/she/it is keeping) αὐτοῦ τὸν λόγον, ἀληθῶς ἐν τούτῳ ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ θεοῦ τετελείωται (he/she/it has been perfected), ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ ἐσμεν.


1. ἀγγελία, -ας, ἡ, message.

2. ἀναγγέλλω, I proclaim.

3. φῶς means “light.” Its dative form is coming up: φωτί.

4. ψεύδομαι, I lie.

5. καθαρίζω, I cleanse.

6. πλανάω, I deceive.

7. τεκνίον, -ου, τό, little child.

8. γράφω, I write.

9. παράκλητος, -ου, ὁ, mediator, intercessor, helper.

10. ἱλασμός, -οῦ, ὁ, expiation, atoning sacrifice.

11. ἡμέτερος, -α, -ον, our.

12. ὅλος, -η, -ον, whole. A peculiarity of this adjective is that it occurs in the predicate position when it is functioning as an attributive.

13. τούτῳ is the dative of οὗτος. In this case it is masculine. The same form can also be neuter. Note that there are two later occurrences in 2:5; the first one is masculine and the second one is neuter.
