Books are magical things. They start as a wisp of an idea, a tendril of smoke with no real substance or staying power. But if you build upon them, they become a roaring hearth fire, something beautiful meant for all to share. Of course, this only happens with the care and hard work of many. For me it starts at home—with the love of Wolf, Pirate, Sasi, Nonno, and Kit—family who cheer me on and bolster my spirit, creating kind spaces from which to create. I don’t know how I got so lucky.

Then there is my dearest agent, Ro, who is my work family. She’s unfailingly supportive and kind, and knowing she’s there makes the world a little brighter.

I’m so happy to have the wonderful crew at Blackstone who have lent their creativity and love to this book—Dan Ehrenhaft, Lydia Rogue, Josie Woodbridge, Sarah Riedlinger, Rebecca Malzahn, Tatiana Radujkovic, Francie Crawford, Nikki Carrero, Brianna Jones, Katrina Tan, David Baker, Amy Craig, and Riam Griswold.

Thug je che na, Geshe Dorji Dumdal-la, for translating the quote from Shantideva’s text Bodhisattvacharyavatara. He has been endlessly patient and kind throughout the many years I’ve known him, answering all of my philosophical questions and challenging me to view the world from new perspectives. It’s a blessing to know him.

My wonderful critique partners—Kerry Kletter, Jennifer Niven, Lana Harper, Jilly Gagnon, Chelsea Sedoti, Jeff Zentner—they are on the front lines before anyone else sees my books, and there cheering when they come out. You guys are the best!

Also a big thank-you to my doctor, Effi Hochberg, for saving my life and giving me a second chance that makes every day special and turned living into the best adventure!

Last, but never least, to my lovely readers and FAMB members. You are seen. You matter more than you know. And I love you.
