While most clients place the desire for a family room near the top of their wish list for functional rooms on the main floor, not everyone sees it the same way. For a pair of stylish, luxury-loving empty nesters, the brief was to design a living/dining room space with a few ground rules: seating for six; a place for morning coffee, newspaper reading, and news watching; and a place to sit comfortably to connect with each other.
Every family room needs comfortable lounge seating, but there’s no rule dictating that they must match. Two distinct chairs can be unified to work as a his-and-hers pairing by upholstering them in the same fabric, with matching wood stain on the leafs. Lean frames and elegant silhouettes complement each other while offering two distinctly different options for everyday lounging.
With narrow proportions, a room can feel cramped if all the furnishings are solid and bulky, so a low, contemporary glass coffee table with a boxy chrome frame was chosen to reference the light and airy dining table.
