PLAYFUL PARADISE

It’s well-known that little girls love pink and princesses, and all things girlie and sparkly, but that doesn’t mean every bedroom scheme needs to look as though it were inspired by cotton candy and executed in a way that is stiflingly sweet. Pink may be the most prevalent colour available in mass-market kids’ decor, but it’s not the only hue in the rainbow that can make a little girl happy. For a bedroom shared by a toddler and a baby, I stepped outside the pink zone to achieve a look that’s playful and happy without being too predictable.

COLOUR ME ANYTHING

I often find the offering of available finishing options on basic products uninspiring and feel compelled to add my own twist in an effort to create a unique result. Bunk beds are a popular choice amongst little kids, since the idea of sleeping up high, climbing the ladder, and having not one but two beds are all exciting concepts to a small person. If the bunk bed you’ve decided to purchase isn’t available in the colour of your choice, you can always paint it to make your little princess happy. After all, what little girl wouldn’t prefer pale lavender over a plain white bed? If you plan to paint a new piece of furniture, it’s best to paint all the individual elements separately for maximum coverage and then assemble it.

CLEAN UP WELL

You can never have too much storage in a kid’s room, especially if a play area has been incorporated. The little ones may be small, but they tend to have lots of stuff, and every toy comes with plenty of pieces, so the key to keeping it tidy and maintaining a sense of order relies on whether it’s easy for your kids to learn how to take part in the cleanup. If storage solutions are easy to access and designated for specific purposes, you may find that, at the end of each play session, it’s easy to scoop up all the pieces and toss them back where they belong. A round storage ottoman with a removable top can even double as a play table, and the upholstered frame makes it a soft, multifunctional addition to the room.

MAKE IT EASY

Creating a unique kids’ bedroom is a great choice. To help make the process as easy and cost-effective as possible, I recommend selecting a single colour to use as your main foundation for the room. Pulling together a mix-n-match scheme of fabrics is achievable if you are working in a monochromatic palette, but it’s more challenging to find multiple options with a coordinated palette in a multicolour scheme. You can always inject a secondary colour through solid fabrics, decorative accents, or paint finishes. Mixing a polka-dot, a stripe, and a mini print with the scenic wallpaper created a textured mix of patterns for a lighthearted, kid-friendly concept, and the hints of lilac make it a fashion-forward combination that’s a refreshing departure from bubble-gum pink.

ENCOURAGE SWEET DREAMS

Children’s books are intended to delight and stimulate the imagination with their charming illustrations. You can bring the story to life by wrapping the walls in a wallpaper pattern that makes it feel as though your little one is sleeping amidst the pages of an adventure story. The whimsical drawings on this design are playful without being juvenile, so the pattern should be an appealing choice for years to come.
