I Raymond Kazuya will answer and debunk the many burning questions, speculations, and conjecture circulating around this subject matter.
Will machines eventually surpass human intelligence?
Answer: This is a hot topic, and some consider this to be the point of "singularity" where machines reach a level of autonomy and mental acumen on par with human intuition. However, I can confidently say no, machine intelligence will not surpass human intelligence any time soon, nor even in the distant future.
Why? Simply put, machine learning in its infancy stage where algorithms are used primarily to dictate how a machine learns and this is not sufficient enough or capable of producing a sort of self-learning process or even self-realization for that matter. Algorithms as you know are a set calculations, rules or procedures that are closely followed by machines to arrive at an answer.
Machines operate on the basis of knowledge, and this knowledge is bestowed onto them by its creators, humans. But on the contrary, humans don't only operate on the premise of knowledge, but execute with wisdom. Machines do not posses wisdom as wisdom can only be acquired by real life experiences.
Perhaps if we somehow find a way to integrate machine components within our very own biological neural networks, not just merely modeling them, thus, a type of cyborg breed will be created, half human and half machine, than it may be plausible to go under the assumption that machine intelligence may surpass human intelligence. But that's very unlikely, and I can confirm humans will continue to stay at the top of the food chain in intelligence for the foreseeable future and beyond.
When will this technology be available on a mass scale?
Answer: Machine learning technology will be available to the public sooner than you think and on a mass scale too. Think about it, we are already in the era of driverless cars, robots, automated answering machines, automated factory machines, etc.
I would estimate within the next 15-20 years, perhaps even sooner, machine learning capabilities will be widely spread and be implemented in various sectors of society as previously mentioned. The ramifications will be unprecedented, jobs will be effected as a short term loss, however, quality of life will greatly be enhanced due to this technology.
It's also quite possible, that in the near future our work weeks would be shortened significantly, I dare to say 4 hour work days, and this will be because machines will take over much of the labor market sector. As we speak, driverless trucks are being perfected, and this implies job losses, corporation savings, and a significant decrease in driver fatalities.
What are the dangers of artificial intelligence?
Answer: When the average person fears the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, he or she is most likely thinking of a scenario like the movie "I, Robot", where robots try to overthrow humanity and try to start some sort of revolution. Again, robots will never reach the point of self-realization a truth that makes us humans different from every other species on the planet, simply put our ability to reflect.
So are there any dangers? In short, the direct dangers of artificial intelligence is almost non-existent. However, in-directly we will be affected by machines as previously discussed, job losses, efficiencies, and the enhancement of human life will all be attributed to artificial intelligence.
I would have to say the paramount issue I see with the dangers of AI is imminent job loss and unemployment. As society may not be ready for its full fledged integration yet, and in the beginning it may seem like a bad thing, but the long term benefits of a better infrastructure, efficiencies and reliability must also be taken into account.
How will humans and machines co-exist in the future?
Answer: There will not be much conflict between machines and humans co-existing. It's quite a silly question in my opinion as we have co-existed with technology and machines from its inception.
I doubt there will be any interruptions of significant impact or proportion between our relationship with machines. Humans will continue to evolve, adapt, change, and it seems machines are destined to co-exist with us in harmony. Remember, no matter how intelligent machines may seem, it is us humans who have designed these machines.
Just like how we seamlessly co-exist with machines now, much the same is how it will be in the future.
How will the world embrace artificial intelligence?
Answer: The world will embrace artificial intelligence with open arms. Technology is here for the betterment of humanity, enhancing the quality of life, creating transparency, security, and reliability.
Perhaps at first just like any new invention it will be questioned and feared by a few, but once society has an understanding and grasps the fundamental concepts, I believe it will be widely accepted. Artificial intelligence is here to stay and will revolutionize the future for the better.
