Kegans

On Paignton sands Hawaiian bands

    Play tunes across the sea

Like ‘Home sweet home’; above the foam

    The Kegans call to me

As once again the Devon rain

    Upsets their picnic tea.

Black socks above gymnasium shoes,

    Grey bags above the socks

And golden sand on either hand

    And paper-littered rocks

And slot machines with Paris scenes

    And sharp electric shocks.

And bridge and golf and golf and bridge

    And travels in the car,

A large saloon with all aswoon

    From Reginald’s cigar;

From three to four an A.A. tour

    And then the cinema.

We’ve left our hearts in Wimbledon

Our feet are in the waves,

And when the rain comes down again

    We’ll shelter in the caves,

And if we see impurity,

    Remember ‘Jesus saves’.
