Act 5, Scene 1

The battlefield.

When morning broke, the armies marched and now stood face to face

Their swords were honed, their armour shone, the generals in their place.

Then Brutus called to Antony, "I ask we try once more

To heal this rift between us with words instead of war."

“What words could heal”, cried Antony, "the evil you did start?

There are no words to close and heal the holes through Caesar’s heart.

You villains set a deadly course from which there’s no return

For Caesar’s death, by evening’s shade, in hell you’ll hotly burn!"

They prepare for battle. Cassius is troubled by omens of his death.

Cassius to Brutus moved and said, "I fear my death

Great eagles, crows and kites I’ve seen swoop down to steal my breath.

Oh, noble lord, should this be so, this is the last we’ll meet

Embrace me now, one last farewell, and then our fates we’ll greet."

“A last farewell then,” Brutus said, "and this, dear friend, I vow

I’ll not return to Rome in chains, I know not how to bow.

And if it’s willed that we should die, and then as dust be laid

At least we’ll die well knowing that… this parting was well made."

They embrace.
