Chapter 53

Terrak

Thus ends my chronicle. I went to my superiors and told them I didn’t want any accolades or rewards… except one. I wished to retire from covert operations, and from my ambassadorship. “This is the high point of my career,” I told them. “I will never again save the entire galaxy. I’d like that to be the note I end on, not some squalid backroom deal. Let me go out on top.”

My superiors don’t like letting people like me retire, but they’d already seen me make one transmission spreading secrets throughout the galaxy, and I think they were afraid, if they refused, that I’d do the same with some of theirs .

I bought a vineyard on a pleasant Emirates colony world. For the remainder of my days, I will sit on my villa’s porch, and I will sip, and I will look at the stars.

My boss asked me: “Do you really think you can stand to be idle, Terrak? Do you really think you can retire ?”

I told him I absolutely could, and I meant it.

Of course, on occasion, some friends might visit me.

Maybe, sometimes, I’ll arrange for a favor, or two. Make an introduction. Help someone out when they need it.

I’m only retired, after all. I’m not dead.
