Dawn's Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 cups white sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 2 cups confectioners' sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 3 drops red food coloring (optional)
Direction
- Preheat the oven to 175 degrees C (350 degrees F). Line parchment paper onto cookie sheets.
- Cream together the white sugar and shortening in a large bowl until the mix is smooth. Beat in the eggs one by one and then mix in vanilla. Mix the flour, baking soda and baking powder. Mix into creamed mixture alternating with buttermilk until you get a soft dough. Transfer onto the prepared cookie sheets, dropping by teaspoonfuls.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until turned light brown. Let to cool on wire racks.
- Blend together confectioners' sugar and melted butter in a medium bowl until smooth. Slowly mix in the milk until the frosting reaches the consistency desired. If desired, stir in food coloring. Pour over the cooled cookies and then transfer the frosted cookies onto cooling racks or waxed paper until the frosting is set.
