Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von, trans. Charles L. Eastlake. Theory of Colours (Dover Publications, 2006). A classic work on color theory.

Itten, Johannes. The Elements of Color: A Treatise on the Color System of Johannes Itten Based on His Book The Art of Color (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1971). A classic work on color theory.

Melville, Sally. The Knitting Experience Book 3: Color (XRX Books, 2005). Color theory, plus musings on using color in knitting and instructions for projects.

Menz, Deb. Color in Spinning (Interweave Press, 1998). Information on color theory, with detailed studies of dyed and blended color in yarn.

Menz, Deb. Color Works: The Crafter’s Guide to Color (Interweave Press, 2004). Provides excellent information on color theory and on working with color in fiber crafts. Contains a cardboard scale of shades from white to black and instructions for using it to determine the value of colors.

Morton, Jill. Color Logic (Color Voodoo #4) (COLORCOM, 1998). Just one of the excellent e-books available at www.colorvoodoo.com, with practical information and understandable examples.

Chapter 3: Pattern Stitches

When researching this chapter, I surveyed many of the pattern stitch dictionaries available, looking for stitches that used multiple colors and those that might lend themselves to color changes. I found a great deal of overlap among these sources, so you’ll find many of the patterns included here are featured in several books. Some are my own inventions, but chances are other knitters invented the same patterns in the past and may have included them in their own books. There was no way to include all the pattern stitches that work well with multiple colors in this single chapter, and so you may find the following list of additional sources useful.

Schurch, Charlene. Knitting Marvelous Mittens (Lark Books, 1998). A collection of ethnic mitten designs from Russia.

Thompson, Suzann. “Argyles without Seams,” Knitting around the World (Taunton Press, 1993). Explains a method of knitting argyle one diamond at a time, while joining to the adjacent diamonds (pp. 38–41).

Chapter 9: Design Workshop

Budd, Ann. The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns (Interweave, 2002) and Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns (Interweave, 2004). Excellent sources of basic patterns for sweaters and other garments.

Bush, Nancy. Folk Socks: The History and Techniques of Handknitted Footwear (Interweave Press, 1994). History, techniques, and instructions for traditional socks. This book also includes an introductory section that allows you to design your own socks.

Fee, Jacqueline. Sweater Workshop (Down East Books, 2002). Design your own sweater.
