The First Christmas
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
—Matthew 1:18
The beginning of the Christmas story describes the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. At first glance, it appears that there are two important people involved in the story—Mary his mother and Joseph, to whom she was engaged. But the birth of Jesus had very special circumstances, which is where the story takes an interesting turn. God intervened and the signifcance and miracle of the first Christmas begins to unfold.
In December we read a little of the story each day and relive those events. This is one way to prepare our hearts for Christmas—to read and think about the greatest gift in history, which we celebrate on December 25.
Today, as long ago, focus on the special miracles of God’s purposes and presence around you as you gather your Christmas presents and decorate your home. There is a plan and a purpose for you this holiday season, just as there was two thousand years ago.
Dear God,
Today as I work on preparing my heart and home for Christmas, may I reflect on the events of the first Christmas and find strength in knowing You have a special plan for my holidays this year. Amen.
Holiday Tip: Buy as many gifts as possible in one store (or one online store) to minimize your shopping trips or shipping charges.
