Don’t look to orthotics as a permanent solution to injury, any more than you would look to crutches as a necessary companion for the rest of your life. If you’ve had orthotics for a long time, ask yourself: Do I still have the problem I originally got these for? Have I been diligent about improving my strength and flexibility so that the original problem doesn’t recur?
If you decide to wean yourself off orthotics, start by gradually going without them during your non-running time. As you feel safe doing that, do one short run per week without them, then two and keep progressing as your body finds things agreeable.
