Running Ain’t Needlework

One challenge to finding time to run is the nature of running—you need a solid block of time. Running regularly doesn’t work like doing needlework or reading or even some physical pursuits, like ab exercises. You can’t squeeze in a few minutes here, a few minutes there, and at the end of the day have made good progress.

Complicating matters is eating. Wouldn’t it be fabulous, I’ve long thought, if running worked something like gardening, where you could say, “OK, I’ll eat dinner with the kids and then immediately after spend half an hour on my passion.”

The need to find a solid block of time that doesn’t conflict with yours and others’ eating schedules is, I think, among the reasons running isn’t more popular. But that just makes it that much more special for us, doesn’t it?
