Running as Commuting

If you can swing it logistically, try running to or from work a couple times a week. Running to work means you get to the office with both run and commute out of the way while being able to sleep later than if you ran first, then commuted. Why, you might even find you’re in a good mood for the start of the workday! Running home from work gives you a wonderful way to shed the stress of the workday and walk into your home able to devote your full attention to whatever awaits you there.

The biggest challenge (assuming the distance from home to work is doable) is planning, but that’s not much of a barrier. When I had jobs I ran to, I brought in an extra pair of clothes the day before. Depending on how you get to work, running home can mean figuring out a way to get to work the next morning if, say, your car spends the night at the office. (May I suggest running there?) Running home from rather than to work saves you the issue of what to do if there’s not a shower at your office.

Running as a means of commuting saves time, money, and frustration. I enjoyed many a morning run on the trails of Washington’s Rock Creek Park en route to work as I looked down at a line of cars I was moving faster than.
