Running Through Data Smog

Thirty years ago in running, information scarcity was more the issue than information overload. The latter is now a potential stumbling block—everyone with access to blogging software can pronounce himself an expert. As a result, curious runners can be excused if they often feel like they’re doing laps around the Tower of Babel.

When trying to wade your way through the glut of running info available online, bear in mind that running is essentially a conservative sport. By that I mean that thousands of runners have tested every theory using the ultimate lab of trial and error out on the roads. If something were “revolutionary” or “the secret,” then you can bet that ambitious runners will have investigated it and decided whether it’s worth paying attention to from this simple standpoint: Two months later, is my running better because of this? So if some training “secret” that’s in contrast to what most good runners do is being presented by someone with no real credentials, pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
