298. With the eagle still in place above the main entrance, this is how the Reich Chancellery appeared when photographed in 2012. The conversion work has been carried out sympathetically leaving the exterior of the building virtually unchanged. On turning off Staatsstraße onto Urbanweg, the small building standing alone on the right hand side is in fact the original guardhouse. All visitors to Berchtesgaden’s Reich Chancellery would have been stopped by the guards at this checkpoint. Only when the relevant paperwork or security passess had been presented, and checked, would visitors be permitted access to the complex.
