Postcards numbers 35 to 45 deal with the town of Berchtesgaden. The area surrounding this beautiful ancient market town is a patchwork of meadow-clad hills and forests rising to bare, rugged, snow-capped Alpine peaks, with mirrorlike mountain lakes and fast-flowing rivers. On observing these images one can appreciate and fully understand why Adolf Hitler would choose this region to establish his country retreat. The indescribable rejuvenating essence of the area soothes and claims one’s very soul on first contact; then, like some unseen irresistible force, it continually draws the helplessly spellbound individual back unto itself, time, and time again. Such may have been the effect of this region upon Adolf Hitler; that, together with it being reminiscent of his native Austria lying across the nearby border would have proved a combination too strong to resist. Small wonder therefore that the Führer would describe this region as his Wahlheimat (chosen homeland).
