45. Berchtesgaden with Watzmann and Hochkalter.

This postcard was mailed in Marktschellenberg on 21.10.1932. Marktschellenberg, a village approximately six kilometres from Berchtesgaden straddles the road leading from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg. While Hitler had already established his country retreat on the Obersalzberg by the time this card was posted, it was his appointment as Chancellor on 30 January 1933 that heralded the beginning of irreversible changes to this beautiful Alpine region. If one could occupy the position adopted by the photographer of this early 1930s image today, it would reveal many changes; the most obvious being the urbanization of the pasture in the foreground.
