I never went back to see Dr. Stockwell. Teaching at the law school was keeping me busy and I just needed more time to heal. I decided that now that I was a Rabbi , I would study the soul from the Kabbalah . It wasn’t this mystical teaching of the sages; it was the clarification of a lot of the questions that I had. What was a soul? Where did it come from? How did it heal after a loss? Even though I studied and learned, the most important thing I learned was that it still could not replace my Luisa. That was a hole that still needed mending.
Jeremiah and I tried the best that we could to have a normal house. We talked as much as we could; attended school and synagogue functions. But we both knew that it was missing the love and joy that was brought by Luisa. It would never be normal today.
Jeremiah continued to study hard and excel. He had started a public school his senior year at his request. He wanted to go to school with his neighborhood friends. They had been friends since he was a young boy and we both agreed the change would be good. One day he was invited to a Bible study by Sabrina. They had become friends through school. They had both lost parents. Her parents had passed away due to a car accident and she was staying with an aunt and uncle. Through this common ground, they grew to be very close, almost like a sister and brother. I was very happy for Jeremiah to have someone his age to talk to about loss. They would take turns going to each other’s house to study, watch TV, or just talk. They spent more time here with me and I grew very fond of Sabrina, as well. She became almost like the daughter that I never had.
Having Christian friends for Jeremiah was not an issue. He was Jewish; they were Christians. It was that simple. But little did he know that this meeting, this encounter, would change our lives forever.
