Given the vast array of evidence needed to create Bauhaus Women: A Global Perspective, our project would have been impossible without the support of archives and researchers from around the world. Above all, we wish to thank our selected guest authors who joined us to share their expertise in few of the book’s essays, Esther Bánki, Anke Blümm, Andrea Dippel, Burcu Dogramaci, Magdalena Droste, Ulrike Müller, Ingrid Radewaldt, and Julia Secklehner. We are deeply grateful for the support of Sabine Hartmann, head photo archivist at the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin, who helped us in myriad ways on often little-known aspects of the Bauhaus. We appreciate the willingness of Zuzana Blüh, Stephan Consemüller, Gisela Driesch, Josenia Hervás y Heras, Walter Keller, Stephan Leudesdorff, Heinrich Mühlmann and Allen Shawn to share information about their family members.

We are grateful to Hayley Haupt, who translated the German essays into native English, and to Chihiro Heckman, who provided research help on the Michiko Yamawaki essay. Our academic homes gave us the opportunity to pursue these research paths. For Elizabeth Otto, the Frank H. Kennan Fellowship at the National Humanities Center provided time to write and the amazing research assistance of librarians Brooke Andrade, Sarah Harris, and Joe Milillo, and the backing of her home university, the State University of New York at Buffalo, was likewise essential. Patrick Rössler’s work would not have been possible without the ongoing support of the President of the University of Erfurt, Walter Bauer-Wabnegg, its chancellor, Andreas Brauns, and the Head of the University Library, Gabor Kuhles, as well as Susanne Werner, responsible for the holdings in media and communication studies. Finally, profound thanks to Jo and Jon Rippon and the staff of Palazzo Editions who believed in the project from the outset and dared to do something different.

We dedicate this book to Bauhaus women everywhere, both those in the preceding pages, and the others still out there waiting to be discovered. These women made the Bauhaus the diverse, lively, and enduring institution it was; they show that the Bauhaus spirit was, at its heart, also female.
