I am grateful to R. Sivapriya of Penguin India and Ivor Indyk of Giramondo Publishing for suggesting that they bring out my Collected Poems 1969–2014 (2014) and Collected Poems (2016), respectively. That forced me to cast a backward glance. As often happens, the books turned out to be fatter than expected; the present volume is based on them. There are, however, a few exceptions.
