Let’s say you need to wash all of the windows in your house. They’re filthy; they haven’t been washed for 25 years. You can’t even see out of them. It’s like having the shades down all the time, they’re that bad.
Well, it may be overwhelming because you live in a four-story house that has 156 windows in it. And they’re all at least 4’ x 8’ in size. So what you do is you pick a window and you wash one window inside. You then, the next day you wash the outside of that same window. The day after you do the inside of window #2, and the day after that you do the outside of window 2, and so on. Though it may take a while to do all 156 windows, you will get them done—just do one at a time.
And you can repeat it until you have all the windows done inside. Then you go and you start on the outside. And do one window, then another window, then another and so on. Or you can decide to do the inside and the outside of one window. Or perhaps you’ll do the inside and the outside of a set of windows in one room.
The biggest job, the most time consuming hardest job, can be done if you just break it into little pieces. You must decide to do that, and when you’ll start. And you get a sense of satisfaction when you do it. It makes you feel more like doing it the next time.
Also, something that’s absolutely crucial is to maintain a fast tempo. When you start to find your energy lagging, see if you can move a little faster. There’s something about that that kicks up the energy in your body when you do it. It makes you feel better. You’re more on track. You’re moving forward more effectively.
Work for results, not just for being busy. There are lots of people who just like to look busy. Don’t do that. Work for results. It makes a difference in how you do what you do.
