Anger and the liver

According to Chinese medicine, anger affect the function of the liver. One of the function of the liver is to allow Qi (energy) to flow smoothly throughout the body. Anger would tense up the body and thereby constrict and inhibit the smooth flow of the qi. A person will tense up when angry cause by the tendons that is controlled by the liver.

When the energy stagnate, it may result in loss of appetite, pale face, and cold limbs. When the liver is not in harmony, the person may experience mood swing, tension and premenstrual syndrome for female.

When I come across those with serious liver disease, I would normally check whether this patient has a strong character and get angry easily. If he affirm that he is an impatient person and become tense easily, I would know the likely source of the disease. When the energy stagnate, it may result in loss of appetite. In most Chinese family drama, we would often notice that if one is agitated during a meal, he would lose appetite. That could also be the reason why my father advised us against talking during meals as a wrong sentence could spoil the whole meal. When the liver is not in harmony, the person may experience mood swing, swollen breast, tension and premenstrual syndrome for female.

A person prone to anger is usually impatient and irritable, two prevailing traits that I noticed among those who suffer from gastrointestinal cancer. The eyes being part of the system would cause a person to see blur when he is angry.

Serious stagnation of energy may lead to dementia (deterioration of intelligence)

Anger may cause liver energy to rise resulting hypertension

Our lifestyle subject us to various pressure from stress can causes anger which is detrimental to our liver. In fact a National Opinion poll carried out a research that points towards people flared up more easily than before.

Applying the inhibitive relationship of the five element, anger which is related to the liver can be overcome by taking deep breath (metal against wood)
