Chapter XIX - Anthony Realizes He Loves Carrie
While in jail, Anthony decided he liked Carrie more than he realized. As soon as he got out he started bugging mother to take him to Jackson so he could see Wyatt, Nick, and Shocoby, but most of all he wanted to see Carrie. Finally in December, Mother took Anthony to see his old friends.
When he saw Carrie he called me and put her on the phone because he was so excited to see her. We spoke for a few minutes and then we hung up. Mother took the two of them to McDonald’s to eat that night so they could spend some time together. Carrie had a boyfriend at the time so Anthony was disappointed about that but he told me he only liked her as a friend anyway so it was no big deal. I knew better than that because he got too excited about seeing her but he had to figure that out for himself. Not only did he get excited about seeing Carrie but Carrie got just as excited about seeing him.
Once Anthony left Jackson and got back to White House he got really down because he wanted to be with Carrie. He called me one day and said, “I can’t explain it but I’ve got to see Carrie because I have to talk to her.” He had a sound of urgency in his voice so I asked him, “Why do you have to see her so badly?” He said, “I miss her, I miss her a lot and I just don’t think I can make it without her. Mimi and Charlie told me Carrie could come live with us until we get on our feet but when I called her to ask her she told me, ‘No’. I’m going to Mississippi to get a job and stay with Nick until I can afford to get a place for Carrie and me. I just can’t live without her.” I said, “Son, what are you trying to tell me.” He said, “I’m not really sure,” but I knew what he was trying to tell me and I wanted him to say it himself.
He finally came out and said, “I love her mom! I love her!” I said, “Well, have you told her that?” He said, “No, I just figured it out myself. What do I do?” I said, “Well, you need to tell her how you feel.” He said, “But what if she says no?” I said, “You will not lose anything by letting her know how you feel because you don’t have her right now anyway.” He said, “How do I tell her?” I told him, “Just tell her how you feel.” He was all excited because he’d finally figured out he loved her and he was going to tell her. We hung up the phone and he called Carrie.
Carrie told him she was with someone else right now and she couldn’t leave him for Anthony. This crushed his heart and he called me all upset. I explained to him he hadn’t lost her because he didn’t have her to start with.
