Verse 109

Jesus said, “The kingdom is like a man who had a [hidden] treasure in his field without knowing it. And [after] he died he left it to his [son]. The son [did] not know (about the treasure). He inherited the field and sold [it]. And the one who bought it went plowing and [found] the treasure. He began to lend money at interest to whomever he wished.”

One who finds a buried treasure in a field he purchases will seem to the onlooker to have become wealthy out of nowhere. It will seem as though, from poverty or an average state, great wealth has arisen by way of some miracle. Yet he will know how he has come into his wealth. It is the same with a holy tzaddik. He or she seems to come out of nowhere and to bring forth a wealth of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and spiritual matters from thin air. Yet that treasure from which they draw is within him or herself from the indwelling presence and power of God.

It is amazing and seems like a miracle only so long as that same treasure remains hidden within ourselves and we have not discovered it. What we see with the tzaddikim and maggidim is within each and everyone of us. We need only bring it forth from within ourselves, as they have brought it forward, in order to experience the spiritual wealth.

A holy tzaddik, one who has brought forward his or her soul and Divine self, can share something of that wealth with us. Under the right conditions, they can demonstrate something of the Divine presence and power and even facilitate a direct spiritual experience, but such blessings are like a loan that we must pay back. We must integrate and actualize what we have received to the extent that we also can share and give of that Light to others, not only being elevated by our tzaddik, but also elevating our holy tzaddik and others. This is the interest we owe to the holy one who teaches and initiates us so that the Light-transmission remains alive and continues beyond our teacher.

Let us bear in mind that in the fruit of a tree are the seeds of the next generation. Receiving, may we be empowered to share and give what we have received and so fulfill the cycle of initiation. Amen.
