The Rev. J.J. James’s Advice for the Single Man
On Manliness – Flirtation – Contraception – How to Choose a Wife by the Shape of her Legs – The Age to Marry – The Wedding Day
We, all of us, have a calling in life and for the young man, fresh from his youth and schoolboy activities, the modern world holds much in the way of excitements and abounds in curious experiences. My own feelings run to the knowledge that, without proper guidance, the moral fortitude of man can become somewhat questionable; and without instruction, a gentleman can find himself quickly beset by troubles on all sides. It is my intention to impart a modicum of advice to those who have yet to find happiness within the marital union, as well as to offer a guiding hand in how this may be most quickly achieved.
I speak also to those men of the world who engage in activities both immoral and dangerous to their sex. Do not think I am unwise to your adventures and do not think to dismiss the advice held within the pages of this volume, for it may well prevent further catastrophe from befalling you.
On Manliness: -
I shall begin with a declaration of what a man truly is: he is one who is, at all times, courageous in danger, meeting the trials of his daily life (should they come) with a bravery and nobility especially found in the male sex. He boldly faces misfortune and in every way you will find him to act the part of a truthful and upright man. A woman looks to find in a man all that she believes to be manly and these qualities will inspire in her the feelings of love. On no account should a man act in opposition to his character in the game of love, for what can be more absurd than to see a man woo a girl under the pretence that he is different from what he really is? It is a most disingenuous act, one that will only end in unhappiness and ruin for both parties.
