There is occasion for some men to believe that love, and all its trappings, is only found through a slavish deference to the wishes of their lady love. This is a ridiculous idea and will only lead to boredom for all concerned. A respectful manner is the most appropriate, rather than mawkish fawning, which no woman of good sense should ever allow. Always seek to make your conduct towards her show you to be straightforward, studiously respectful and manly. I must strongly advise you to always speak to women as if they were rational beings and not the mere playthings of an hour.

Should your overtures of love be met with a welcoming reaction, remember that you should not be too forward in boasting of your previous conquests, as no woman will welcome such conversation. Worse still would be to refer to those ephemeral beings you have loved in the past. Such conduct will only ever be seen to be in the worst possible taste. It is also very liable to breed angry and jealous feelings within the listener, feelings which are easily roused and far more difficult to quell than the speaker would expect. Whilst jealousy can, at times, be an added inflammation to the passions, an unduly jealous lover exposes himself as an unattractive husband – something you would be wise not to do. I would also argue that the same rules could be applied to a lady, as her conduct should be examined as much as your own.
