* In his 2013 book, One Day in August: The Untold Story Behind Canada’s Tragedy at Dieppe, David O’Keefe re-examines the raid to show that during the main Dieppe assault, Royal Marine commandos were to penetrate the inner harbour and capture a four-rotor Enigma machine at the Hôtel Moderne, as well as code books aboard German trawlers moored along the wharf. The Marines were repeatedly thrown back by heavy German fire at the entrance to the harbour.
