In a digital world awash in extremism, misinformation, and conspiracy theories, distrust has spread into media at large, especially the cable networks. Between 2016 and 2021, Americans’ trust in national news organizations suffered a sharp decline. This trend, like so many others in this decade, was acutely divided across party lines.
In five years, the share of Democrats who trust national news organizations fell 5%. Among Republicans, the drop was 35%. Today, less than 6 in 10 Americans trust the information that comes from national news organizations, and our confidence in newspapers and television news is at an all-time low.
