Online Dating Apps Are More Inequitable Than Almost Anywhere on Earth

Dating apps sort potential partners into a tiny group of haves and a titanic group of have-nots. The most attractive people on the platform score the largest share of matches, whereas the vast majority receive very few. To measure economic inequality in societies, economists use a Gini coefficient. Higher coefficients mean greater levels of inequality, and lower coefficients mean lower levels of inequality. As it pertains to likes received, heterosexual females and males on Hinge showed a Gini index of 0.38 and 0.54, respectively. Accordingly, if Hinge were an economy, it would rank among the most unequal places in the world.
