CHARTS

Tolkien’s imaginary world is of enormous complexity and richness and encompasses thousands of years of history, a detailed (and changing) geography, and a diversity of peoples, cultures, and languages. For all that, his major fictional works—The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion—wear this “world-building” lightly, for newcomer and initiate alike; the details of Tolkien’s legendarium can sometimes bewilder, even as it fascinates and beguiles.

The following pages bring together a number of charts, tables, and chronologies that will help the reader negotiate the byzantine byways of Middle-earth with all the ease and wisdom of Elrond of Rivendell. There is a chronology of the major events from the Creation to the beginning of the Fourth Age, as well as others tracing the histories of the Rings of Power and Gollum. There are charts showing the “evolution” of various kindreds—among the Elves, Men, Hobbits, and Dwarves—and still others detailing the astonishing wealth of flora and fauna that Tolkien created for his world. Two tables detail the connections between Tolkien’s Valar and Maiar and the gods of the Norse and Greco-Roman pantheons.

While mastery of such detail is hardly necessary for an appreciation of Tolkien’s greatness as a writer of narrative and fantasy fiction, it does nonetheless contribute to our sense of the immensity of the feat of the imagination that is Middle-earth, and of the mythological, philological, historical, and literary sources that underlie it—buried, so to speak, within its geology.

BREEDS OF HOBBIT

  HARFOOT FALLOHIDE STOOR
NAME

Harfoot: English surname Hare-foot.

Hare-foot: Anglo-Saxon epithet or nickname usually meaning fast runner or nimble as a hare.

Falo-hide:
falo—Old High German: pale yellow.
hide—English: skin or pelt.
Fallow Hide:
fallow—Old English:
ploughed land.
hide—Old English: measure of land.

Stoor:
stur (Middle English)

stor (Old English)

strong (Modern English)

JOKE Harfoot → Hare-foot → Hair-foot. Follow-Hide: game of Hide and Seek. Stoor → stower → store.
TYPICAL NAMES OF BREEDS Brown and Brownlock are descriptive of the hair and skin color of Harfoots. Other names such as Sandheaver, Tunnelly, and Burrows suggest the construction of hole-dwelling Harfoot Hobbit homes. Names such as Gardner, Hayward, and Roper tell us of typical Harfoot occupations. The fair-haired Fallohides are suggested by family names such as Fairbairn, Goold, and Goldworthy. Their unconventional and independent nature and their intelligence are suggested by names such as Headstrong and Boffin. Puddifoot is a Stoorish name as it suggests “puddle-foot,” or someone who enjoys seeing in water. However, as an English surname, it was originally Puddephat (or Pudding Vat, or otherwise Bulgy Barrel), meaning a man with a fat belly. So we get these images at once: large, fat, and water-loving. Banks appears to be a name for Hobbits who liked to live on river banks. Other names like Cotton, Cottar, and Cotman may have been Stoorish names in origin because they all mean “Cottager” and the Stoors were the first Hobbits to emerge from their holes and live in houses.
