Great Power
‘Be not afraid of greatness: some men are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them’.
Shakespeare, Twelfth Night
You can have a dynamic effect on the situation. But the fact that you are in a strong position gives you a responsibility to use it well. Do not be aggressive or domineering. Before making a decision, carefully consider what would be of most benefit to all concerned. Be open to advice and to the views of others. If you insist on going your own way regardless, you will create opposition. At the end of the day, however, you must listen to your own conscience and do what is right. Refuse to be side-tracked by any considerations which are not central to the issue. Once you know what must be done, do not act impulsively or try to hurry things to suit yourself. Wait for the right time. Then take decisive action.
An opportunity for personal growth
Those who have real power are the ones who least need to use it. Individuals who show off and try to dominate others are not powerful. They are insecure people trying to make themselves feel powerful. Be patient, tolerant and respectful of the feelings of others. Play by the rules. Think before you act. If you rush into things like a bull in a china shop, you will create havoc. Do not be tempted to throw your weight around or manipulate others for your own ends. If you abuse your position in any way, sooner or later your actions will rebound on you. Be determined to do what is right. Keep any self-indulgent tendencies firmly under control.
Further aspects of the situation
NINE AT THE BEGINNING
However strong and confident you feel, the conditions are not favourable for you to push ahead. If you act recklessly, you will lose credibility. Be content with taking some preparatory steps. Do not invest all your energy or resources at this stage. Over-enthusiasm at the beginning of a situation usually fades quickly.
NINE IN THE SECOND PLACE
With no serious opposition to hinder you, progress can now be made. Do not let this make you careless. Everything will turn out well provided that you do not become over-confident.
NINE IN THE THIRD PLACE
The more truly powerful a person is, the less he or she needs to use that power. By openly displaying your strength, you will attract hostility. Do not try to force matters in any way.
NINE IN THE FOURTH PLACE
Provided that you use your influence in the right way, obstacles will vanish. The best way to overcome resistance is to proceed quietly and very patiently, one step at a time. Bear in mind the principle of water wearing down a stone.
SIX IN THE FIFTH PLACE
The situation has changed for the better. Now, nothing stands in your way. This means that there is absolutely no need to be stubborn or aggressive. You can resolve the situation harmoniously.
SIX AT THE TOP
The situation has reached stalemate. You can make no further progress. If you persist in trying to force results, you will make things even more complicated. Stop struggling. Resign yourself to the fact that there is nothing more you can do. If you are to resolve this issue, you must find a different approach.
