Waxing Moon Magic

A bundance, expansion, and external outcomes are the focus of waxing moon magic. Protection spells, love spells, money spells, fertility spells, beauty spells, creativity spells, abundance workings, health spells, acknowledgment, fame, promotion, and recognition spells are all supported at a waxing moon. Blockbuster spells are perfect here. Victory, success, and overcoming-obstacles spells are all great to do during the waxing moon. This is the time to cast spells for getting things done. And this, of course, is the time to get the things done.

Sex magic, sympathetic magic, creative magic such as making art, charms, talismans are especially supported here. Repetitive spell work—where you repeat the same spell over a period of time, or do a spell that takes place over a period of days—is especially supported by the growing energy of the waxing moon.

CREATING YOUR WAXING MOON ALTAR

A waxing moon altar could be up for a few days or the full two weeks until the full moon. It could be up until the next waxing moon—though I’ve never done that, I’ve known others who practice differently than myself who leave their altars up for one entire lunation.

A waxing moon altar could have important symbolic objects on it that correspond to your waxing moon actions and focus. Your altar could be an interpretation of your waxing moon energy. It could also serve as a reminder of what you are working on. Create visual representations of where you wish to grow. Personally, I like to keep my waxing moon altar overflowing with symbolic objects, offerings, and asks.

Your waxing moon altar could be a ceramic pot you paint in a meaningful pattern and put next to your workspace. Your waxing moon altar could be you, saying what you want to do, then doing it, no matter how many butterfly nerves are fluttering in your belly. Always remember—your altar is you, and that can change! Your altar is the devotion you keep and the wonder you conspire to create. It is the work you put out into the world. It is how you treat yourself and how you decorate your own precious vessel.

Simple Money Magic Humanifestation Spell

You will need:

  • A white pen and a red pen
  • A green or gold candle that is not in a votive (you will need to carve the candle)
  • An athame, pin, nail, or other sharp utensil
  • Money—especially money that correlates to the amount you’d like to be making: for example, eight dollar bills for eighty thousand dollars, etc. (coins will work as well)
  • Crystals that connote abundance and prosperity to you such as pyrite, malachite, crocodile jasper
  • Herbs that connote prosperity such as basil, frankincense, bay leaves, cinnamon

Spell set-up:

Set your altar up so your spell ingredients surround your candle.

Think about what you want to create or call in more of. Get specific and pick one thing. If this is a dollar amount, be specific. Pro tip: It is better to wish for an amount that you want to make for an entire year (or a stable income for the next few years total) rather than to do stopgap spells for money (such as “I need to make rent”), because then, every few months, you might find yourself having to do another “make rent” spell. Also, being open to money coming in through all possible healthy ways that are for the good of all is a tactic to try. Similarly, wishing for vibrant long-term health or helpful health practitioners for the next few years makes more sense then casting a spell to end a flu. Be careful with spell phrasing; be specific.

Write down your desire and add “this or better.”

Casting the spell:

Cast your circle, and initiate any specific actions that you usually do to ground your spell and raise your power.

Carve and dress your candle with your intended desire. There are three suggested ways to do so: 1) make it very simple, with the dollar amount, or one or two words that express the desire; 2) get creative and carve a symbol of that desire; or 3) make your own sigil.

Light the candle.

Chant your spell, or read aloud your desire, three times. Then put the paper into the flame.

Put the money into your hands to charge with your energetic intent.

Visualize your intended outcome, or summon the energy or feelings your intended outcome would have in your body, as you hold the coins. Draw the symbol, word, or sigils that you made on your candle on the money, if they are bills.

Burn the candle for at least three days when you are home. (Never leave a burning candle unattended.)

After the candle has burned down, dismantle your altar. Spend or give away the money that you used in your spell in a way that is meaningful to you. Commit to doing any and all work required of you to expand and receive more prosperity.

Energy Spell

This is a spell to help boost your energy and support momentum and motivations around desired actions.

Suggested tools:

  • Paper
  • Red pen
  • Red string
  • Candle (preferably red, yellow, orange)
  • Bay leaf
  • Crystals that symbolize energy and movement, such as carnelian, citrine, bloodstone, silver, copper, fluorite, or clear quartz
  • You may also want to pick out a soundtrack for your spell, to also listen to later, full of pick-me-ups and invigorating jams.

Before you begin, think about what you’ve truly been wanting to do, and what you’ve been putting off. This is a spell to jump-start those impulses and bring them out into the world. This is a spell as much for courage and energy activation as it is for anything else.

Cleanse: Either take a shower, wash your face and hands, light your dried plant matter bundle and pass it up and down your body and energy field, or take a salt bath.

Set up your altar by placing your chosen spell ingredients in a placement that symbolizes the support, energy, or motivation you need. For example, maybe you need discipline and consistency: you may wish to place your items in a square shape on your altar. Maybe you need more freedom: you might put them in a playful pattern with space around each ingredient. Do what feels good.

Cast your circle.

Light your candle and focus on the flame. Hold your hands around the light, and imagine the light from the candle going into your hands and moving all around your energetic field. Connect to the feeling of the flickering flame and bring this energy into your heart, into your third eye, into your hands, and all around your body.

Write down what it is that you will be moving forward on. Put the bay leaf on your paper and fold the paper around it.

Place one of your crystals on the bay leaf.

Wrap the string around it all while chanting or singing your wishes.

Move your body around in some way to move the energy around. Cheer, stomp, or dance—whatever gets your blood pumping.

Affirm that you will begin taking the next steps forward in the physical realm during this waxing moon period, if not sooner. Know that this or something better will be making its way to you once you start moving forward.

Place the talisman you just made (the paper, crystal, bay leaf) next to your candle. If you have other items on your altar, place them around the talisman to charge them. When your candle burns down, take the talisman off your altar and carry it around with you to remind you of what you need to do.

Waxing Moon Tarot Pull: Staying Centered

This is a simple choose-your-own-adventure five-card pull to keep you centered in your work and movement during the waxing moon.

Card 1: Go through your deck and pick a card that corresponds to what you are working on at this time. This card must mirror the finished state of the goal and how you want to feel as you do the work.

Relax your body and take some deep breaths. Focus on your desire as you shuffle the tarot deck. Every person has their own shuffling ritual: you may wish to shuffle between each card pull, or shuffle and then pull the cards in succession.

You will be creating a square with the other four cards; moving clockwise:

Begin by placing card 2 at the top left of the original card: this is the next step or action to take in service of your goals.

Place card 3 to the top right of the original card: this is a block, shadow, or challenge that is coming up or will come up as you move forward.

Place card 4 to the bottom right of the original card: this is how you can address or work with this challenge. (Take specific note of this; if this is a challenge that is a theme in your life, and if this rings true! Taking action could also help break other long-held patterns.)

Place card 5 to the bottom left of the original card: this is what will transform or heal for you after doing the work.

You can choose a tarot card from this spread to engage with as a patron archetype, to keep you focused and moving forward. Keep it as a screensaver on your phone, draw it, write down what advice it would give you.

Waxing Moon Charms

From around the waxing crescent to the first quarter is an excellent time to create a magical charm. A charm is a magical spell or object that is infused with luck or intention. Across the globe humans have utilized these symbols: the Venus of Willendorf, thought by some to be a fertility amulet; the Eye of Horus, or all-seeing eye, an Egyptian amulet for protection, power, and health; the Hamsa, a Jewish symbol of luck, good fortune, health, and protection. You may wish to make a charm out of items from your particular culture’s symbology or herstory.

Charms act as tangible, portable reminders of our current intention. Make a charm or talisman for protection: you might sew a dark-colored pouch and fill it with black tourmaline, yarrow, and rosemary, a small shield, and a handwritten poem about safety. A love charm could utilize rose petals or rosewater, rose quartz, violets, and a love letter you’ve written to yourself.

Some witches cast a circle, ground, and charge their charm with the elements: pass it through a candle flame, to charge it with fire, breathe on it to charge with air, sprinkle water on it, or salt for earth (or touch it to your pentacle, if you have one). You can visualize your intentions with the charm in your hands, and then ground it to the earth. You can put the charm on your altar until a lit candle burns down, then wear it or put it in your pocket as you go about your day. You can utilize the charm indefinitely, or until you feel as though it’s done its job, then make an offering of it as thanks.

If you are not a super-crafty witch, there are easier ways to make charms than creating your own. Simply buy or use an item that symbolizes what you need: maybe it is a horseshoe for luck or a shield for protection. Hold the item in your hands and focus. Sing a song to the item or chant a spell. Picture your desired energy flowing out of your hands and into the item, infusing it and circling it with your magic. Put the item in a space where you can see it, where it reminds you of its purpose.

A Neutralizing Waxing Moon “Bless It” Meditation

This can be done seated or lying down, as long as you are in a comfortable position. After you’ve gotten comfortable with this exercise, you might want to do this while walking or standing.

Take a few measured breaths in and out. Slow your breath and balance it so that your inhalation takes as much time as your exhalation. When you inhale, fill your lungs with air as much as possible, pushing your belly out. When you exhale, exhale all the way down to the bottom of your breath.

Now, imagine your exhalation expelling unwanted energy into the earth, releasing it so that it goes down into the layers of the earth—deep into the center’s molten core—becoming transmuted into a different, helpful form. Perhaps this energy is in the form of a color. Perhaps this energy can be described, has a tangible, sticky, or tarry quality. Perhaps you have to consciously detach from this energy in order to let it go. After a few rounds of release, do an energy check-in. Do you feel different? More spacious? Does more need to be released? Stay in nervous system regulation mode for as long as you need to.

When you feel ready, re-center by bringing your awareness back to your body in this present moment. On your inhalation, imagine the life-giving, resourceful energy of the earth coming up and rejuvenating you through the soles of your feet, grounding and supporting you, giving your cells sustenance. Let this energy go all the way into your body, your lungs, into the crown of your head. The energy cascades through your arms and hands.

With your inhalation, bless a helpful situation. “Bless this apartment,” “Bless my cat,” “Bless my health,” “Bless this breath,” etc. Say it out loud if you can.

With your exhalation, bless a stressor. “Bless this bill,” “Bless this layoff,” “Bless this fear,” etc.

With your inhalation, respond to the stressors with a solution or affirmation. “Bless my resourcefulness,” “Bless my ability to ask for help,” “Bless my savings,” etc.

Do this for as long as it takes for you to get out all the blessings on your current situation. Take a few more breaths. Maybe you want to make a few loud sighs or yells, shake your body out, or release in another way to close the exercise.
