Joseph F. Coughlin, PhD, is the founder and director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab, a multidisciplinary research program created to understand the behavior of the 50-plus population, the role of technology and design in their lives, and the opportunity for innovation to improve quality of life for older adults and their families. He teaches in the Department of Urban Studies & Planning and the Sloan School of Management’s Advanced Management Program. Coughlin is a Behavioral Sciences Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and recipient of one the Society’s highest awards, the Maxwell A. Pollack Award for Productive Aging, in recognition of his innovative work in translating research into practice. Named by the Wall Street Journal as “one of 12 people shaping the future of retirement” and recognized by Fast Company as “one of the 100 most creative in business,” Coughlin is a member of the Board of Directors of AARP. He speaks to and advises major companies, nonprofits, and governments worldwide.
