Janice stood at the Washington Square Arch and waited. She’d done all this for him. He’d promised if things went south that he would help her. He would get her out. Well things were going south, and she wanted out.
She leaned against the arch. Pretending to be Mary’s long lost daughter hadn’t been difficult. She’d roomed with the real Sofia in college. The girl had been too chicken to meet her mother and her new infamous family.
Then she’d died in a car accident. It had given Janice the perfect opportunity. She’d needed money to finish school so why not pull on the old woman’s heartstrings and use a little guilt.
Mary got to assuage her guilty feelings, have her daughter, and Janice got the money she needed.
Win-win.
That was until he approached her. He knew her secret. He wanted rid of Big Tony for good, and he was willing to pay big for it.
Carlo Ricci didn’t want a legitimate business, but Tony wouldn’t listen. So, the consigliere was taking care of it himself.
Janice tapped her foot and scanned the horizon. The darkness wasn’t helping. She should have waited until morning. In her experience one should always be prepared for the double cross.
No one was in sight. Lowering her head, she typed Joey’s phone number into her phone and started the text.
She glanced up.
Ricci.
She smiled and waved.
Moonlight glistened off the barrel of the gun. She started to back up. It was too late. The shot was silent, but she felt the punch to her chest, and her breath caught.
She dropped to one knee and landed on her side. Her eyes were closing. Her time was almost up, she could feel it.
She pushed send.
Everything went black.
