Turtle Skillet Cakes

To make it resemble an actual turtle, sprinkle pecans on top of this delectable chocolate-caramel creation!

Serves 14

Ingredients

1 18.25-ounce box devil’s food cake mix plus ingredients called for on box

1 tablespoon butter

4 1-ounce pieces semisweet baking chocolate

1 12-ounce jar caramel ice cream topping

Whipped topping

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. Make cake batter according to cake mix instructions.

  3. Melt butter in an oven-safe iron or nonstick skillet over medium heat. Gently tilt the skillet to make sure the butter covers the bottom of the pan.

  4. Turn batter into the skillet and bake in the oven, uncovered, for 30 minutes. Remove skillet from oven and allow cake to cool.

  5. Run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen cake slightly. Then invert the pan onto the cooling rack and allow the cake to fall free.

  6. Grate, shave, or chop the chocolate into small pieces. In a small microwave-safe bowl, mix chocolate pieces and half the caramel topping.

  7. Microwave the chocolate/caramel mix for 40 seconds or until melted. Stir. Pour over cake. Add a thin layer of reserved caramel sauce. Top with whipped topping.

Equipment

Some recipes call for elaborate baking equipment, but this recipe uses something you probably already have: a skillet. This method of baking will work on many basic cake recipes. If you’re just learning to bake and aren’t ready to invest in expensive equipment, try making this recipe in a thin-walled skillet.
