Retro Broiled Pink Grapefruit

This retro breakfast dish deserves a comeback, so here it is with a new twist—honey, agave nectar, or sorghum instead of sugar, to add just a little sweetness. Enjoy this with an egg scrambled with your favorite vegetables.

Serves 4 Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 3 to 5 minutes

2  pink grapefruit

1/4  cup honey, agave nectar, or sorghum

  1. Preheat the broiler. Cut each grapefruit in half crosswise. Use a sharp knife to cut each section to loosen the flesh from the membrane and remove any seeds. Drizzle each grapefruit half with 1 tablespoon sweetener. Arrange the grapefruit in the broiler pan, cut side up.
  2. Broil for 3 to 5 minutes, until lightly browned on top. Serve warm.

WHO KNEW?

Q: I like to drink grapefruit juice but hear that it can interfere with some of my prescription medications. Is that true?

A: Yes. In a Mayo Clinic online newsletter report by Katherine Zeratsky, RD, LD, November 3, 2011, she noted that grapefruit juice, other grapefruit products, and certain other citrus fruits can interfere with several kinds of prescription medications. “Don’t take these interactions lightly, as some can cause potentially dangerous health problems,” Zeratsky said. “Certain chemicals that grapefruit products and citrus fruits contain can interfere with the enzymes that break down (metabolize) various medications in your digestive system. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before consuming any grapefruit products or citrus fruits if you take prescription medications. Simply taking your medication and grapefruit product at different times may not stop the interaction.”
