Chapter 21

A heavy sigh escaped Andrew’s lips. His heart ached as he watched Lauren vanish beyond the sliding glass door. The last thing Andrew wanted to do was intentionally cause her emotional pain. The only reason he had returned to Newport Beach was at the urging of Megan. If it weren’t for their close friendship, he would have preferred to stay in Virginia and send her a gift instead, avoiding the awkward scenario that had just happened.

But there was nothing he could do now. The damage was done, and he only hoped time would heal Lauren’s pain. His heart ached at the thought of losing her, of living life without her smile and gentle personality.

While Karen was intelligent, attractive, and a wonderful Godly woman, he wasn’t entirely comfortable with her strong personality. Everything they did centered around what she wanted, which made him experience an uncomfortable suffocating feeling.

While he had a deep affection for Karen, he wasn’t sure he was in love with her. Not like the insatiable thirst his heart had for Lauren. With the wedding only a few months away, the two of them had been busy making final preparations. But with each passing day, his heart grew heavy, wondering if he was doing the right thing.

His friends told him it was customary to have second thoughts before making such a big commitment. But he wasn’t sure that was the real reason. Loving and cherishing someone “’til death do us part” was God’s design for marriage, and he took that vow seriously.

But was Karen the right one? Was he making a big mistake by letting the past pain keep him from opening his heart to the one God intended for him? Would Lauren be too scared to trust him again? Only God knew the answer.

He stared at the faint twinkling of stars in the dimming twilight and mumbled a quick prayer before heading inside the house.
