Chapter 19

Don’t “Trust Your Heart”

The world will tell you to “trust your heart.” But God says that your heart is “deceitful above all things and beyond all cure” (Jeremiah 17:9). In other words, oftentimes our heart deceives us—telling us that something is good for us, when in truth it is contrary to God’s Word and His will for our lives. The fleshly human heart can often deceive, but when we actively give our heart to Jesus, it’s like getting a heart transplant, and He promises to disclose the purposes of our new hearts to us (1 Corinthians 4:5). Don’t trust your heart. Trust God’s Word to guide and direct you. The world says to “pick yourself up by your bootstraps” and that “God helps those who help themselves.” But God says just the opposite. When you encounter difficult times, rely on God. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). The more you try to do things in your own power without relying on the Lord, the more trouble you will have in this life. God has designed us to be in a relationship with Him and to abide in Him, and to trust Him fully with our lives…To allow Him to become our lives! Jesus said, “I am the vine. You are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him will bear much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Don’t trust in yourself. Instead, “trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding. But in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
