A MADE-UP, FUN WORD-SPELLING CONTEST!

PREPARATION

Players take turns coming up with a made-up word, such as “scratchamytoesis” or “flabborizer” or “juicetastible.”

OBJECTIVE

Players make up a word and try to trick the other players into spelling it incorrectly.

GAME TIME

Player 1 begins by writing down his word without letting anyone see and then pronounces it aloud to the group. He places the correct spelling facedown on the table with his name on it.

Each player then writes down what he or she thinks is the correct spelling of that word and puts his or her pen down when ready. One by one, each player reveals his or her guess.

TIP: Players may ask for the part of speech or to hear the word in a sentence, and the player who provided the word must oblige.

SCORING

Each player who spells the word correctly earns 20 points. Player 1 (or whoever came up with the word for the round) earns 10 points for each player who gets it wrong with one important exception: if nobody spells the word correctly, Player 1 loses 50 points for that round and every other player earns 10 points.

TIP: Make your word hard, but not too hard! In this game, you want only one person to get it right to earn the maximum amount of points for your word.
