no. 10 flat • no. 16 flat • no. 2 script liner
Thicket • Yellow Citron • Magenta • Wicker White • Dioxazine Purple • Yellow Light
1. Create a Lace Paper Doily background following the directions in the techniques section, but using Linen and Wicker White. Let dry. Double-load a no. 16 flat with Thicket and Yellow Citron. The long slender leaves are placed in a somewhat circular design to echo the roundness of the doilies. To paint these leaves, start at the base, push down on the bristles, slide and turn the brush to make half the leaf with a long tip. Then push, slide and turn to connect the second half of the leaf to the first.
2. Double-load a no. 16 flat with Magenta and Wicker White and begin to paint the rhododendron petals. Start at the base of the petal on the chisel, lay the bristles down, slide out and then lift to the pointed tip. Without lifting your brush off the surface, slide back down to the base. Keep the Magenta side of the brush to the outside of the petals. Make some of your petals wider, and some a little narrower.
3. Add the two front petals on the open blossom. Note that the edges of these petals are rolled on one side. As you slide your brush back down to the base, turn it so the Magenta side curves inward toward the center.
4. Darken the throat with little chisel-edge strokes pulled upward from the center, using a no. 10 flat and Magenta. Pick up Dioxazine Purple and dot over the centers.
5. Load a no. 2 script liner with inky Wicker White and pull long curving stamens outward from the center. Dot on anthers with Yellow Light.
