1. Create a Shadow Leaves background following the directions in the techniques section. In this painting, the basecoat color is Sunflower and Wicker White, and the shadow leaves are Yellow Ochre and Wicker White. Let dry. Double-load a no. 16 flat with Thicket and Yellow Citron and dip your brush into lots of floating medium. Paint the center stalk first, starting with the topmost segment and working down, then add the leaves.

2. Double-load Violet Pansy and Wicker White on a no. 16 flat. Paint the back three petals of the open blossom, then the bud. Start at the base of the petal, push down on the bristles, slide up to the point as you lift to the chisel, then slide back down to the base. Keep the Wicker White to the outside on all the petals.

3. With the same brush and colors, add the next three petals to the open blossom, offsetting them from the first three.

4. Load a no. 10 flat with floating medium and Violet Pansy. Using the chisel edge of the brush, shade the center of the open blossom by pulling little streaks outward from the center onto most of the petals.

5. Double-load a no. 10 flat with Yellow Light and Yellow Citron and tap on the cone-shaped stamen using the chisel edge of the brush. To finish, load a no. 10 flat with floating medium and side-load into Violet Pansy. Paint the shading between the petals and where the petals turn. Load a no. 16 flat with floating medium and Yellow Ochre and float shade around all the flowers and leaves to separate them from the background.
