8.2 Migrating System Landscape Directory Content
Assuming that you have a separate/local SLD in the target system, you’ll need to perform an export of objects in the source system and import them into the target system. Although you can back up the entire SLD with all included objects and restore it in the target system, we want to propose the approach of selecting the individual needed objects and exporting them. This ensures that you don’t pick unused objects and therefore avoid polluting your new SAP PO system with unnecessary data.
Even better, you can use the transport mechanism to move the selected objects from your source to the target system instead of using the manual export or import. Be reminded, however, that using the transport mechanism will mean that you’ll need to first enable the transport mechanism for the newly installed SAP PO system. Let’s look at how to manually export and import. We won’t touch on the transport mechanism here because this is business as usual, and you should already be familiar with it.
Different object types need to be exported from the SLD. Because of the dependencies between the different objects, the objects need to be exported in the following chronological order: products, software components (SCs), technical systems, and business systems. You need to export the following object types from the source SLD and import them into the target SLD system.
8.2.1 Products
To export the products objects from the source SAP PI’s SLD, follow these steps:
- From the SLD landing page, click on the Products link.
- Select the products that you want to migrate. Note that you can select multiple products at the same time.
- Click on the Export button.
- When prompted, select a location on your local file system where the file needs to be saved and name the file. The export will be saved as a TPZ file.
You’re now ready to import the exported products into the target SAP PO’s SLD system. To do so, follow these steps:
- Log in to the target SAP PO’s SLD, and click on the Administration link (top-right corner).
- From there, click on the Import button, and select the product’s TPZ file that you previously exported.
- After the import process has finished running, look at the logs to check that all went well or to resolve issues, depending on errors mentioned in the logs. Alternatively, go to the product list to verify that the products you imported are now present.
8.2.2 Software Components
To export the SC objects from the source SLD, follow these steps:
- From the SLD landing page, click on the Software Component link.
- Select the SCs that you want to migrate. Note that you can select multiple SCs at the same time.
- Click on the Export button.
- When prompted, select a location on your local file system (where the file needs to be saved), and name the file. The export will be saved as a TPZ file.
You’re now ready to import the exported SCs into the target SAP PO’s SLD system. To do so, follow these steps:
- Log on to the target SAP PO’s SLD, and click on the Administration link.
- From there, click on the Import button, and select the SC’s TPZ file that you previously exported.
- After the import process finishes running, look at the logs to check that all went well or to resolve open issues, depending on errors mentioned in the logs. Alternatively, go to the SC list to verify that the components that you imported are now present.
8.2.3 Technical System
To export the technical system objects from the source SAP PI’s SLD, follow these steps:
- From the SLD landing page, click on the Technical Systems link.
- Select the technical systems that you want to migrate. Note that you can select multiple technical systems at the same time.
- Click on the Export button.
- When prompted, select a location on the file system (where the file needs to be saved), and name the file. The export will be saved as a TPZ file.
You’re now ready to import the exported technical systems into the target SAP PO’s SLD system. To do so, follow these steps:
- Log on to the target SAP PO’s SLD, and click on the Administration link.
- From there, click on the Import button, and select the technical system’s TPZ file that you previously exported.
- After the import process finishes running, look at the logs to check that all went well or to resolve open issues, depending on errors mentioned in the logs. Alternatively, go to the technical system list to verify that the technical systems that you imported are now present.
8.2.4 Business System
To export the business system objects from the source SAP PI’s SLD, follow these steps:
- From the SLD landing page, click on the Business Systems link.
- Select the business systems that you want to migrate. Note that you can select multiple business systems at the same time.
- Click on the Export button.
- When prompted, select a location on the file system (where the file needs to be saved), and name the file. The export will be saved as a TPZ file.
It’s time to import the exported business systems into the target SAP PO’s SLD system. To do so, follow these steps:
- Log on to the target SAP PO’s SLD, and click on the Administration link.
- From there, click on the Import button, and select the business system’s TPZ file that you previously exported.
- After the import process finishes running, look at the logs to check that all went well or to resolve open issues, depending on errors mentioned in the logs. Alternatively, go to the business system list to verify that the business systems that you imported are now present.
Note that you can also use the standard transport mechanism to migrate these objects instead of using the manual export and import features. After performing all the preceding steps and resolving open issues resulting from the imports, congratulate yourself because the migration of the SLD is done!
