If writing and editing books were a crime, I would be an unrepentant serial offender. This particular criminal conspiracy, moreover, could not have been completed without the enormous help of three individuals. Marilyn Clarke provided the typing and formatting to translate hundreds of pages of original journal articles into this carefully organized anthology and patiently tolerated my additions, corrections, and critiques. Esti Stevens doggedly pursued the reprint permissions for this book to literally the four corners of the earth; fortunately, email now makes such world travels so much easier. And, lastly, John Kerr provided an editorial brilliance and tenacity that made a good book much better. He would not settle for anything less than my best. I am deeply indebted to all of them.
