Introduction

The spring of 1918 brought new hope for a decisive, victorious campaign, although hope was tinged with a sense of dread that the Allied soldier was nearing the end of his ability to persevere. Wolfe’s long-delayed permission (furlough) finally arrived; he journeyed to Aix-les-Bains rather than his choice of Nice.

Throughout Royce Wolfe’s service in France he encountered members of his old college fraternity, providing instant comradeship, a link to home, and a sense of belonging to a greater community.
