Author’s Note

Chris Carlson and I have worked together on many different projects over the last twenty years. Chris is a former submariner, while I was surface navy. My naval experience was completely different from Chris’s, and his submarining background was essential to the writing of this story. It wasn’t the technical data. Anyone can find that. Submariners are a special breed of sailor, with their own attitudes, culture, and a really wicked sense of humor. Anyone who sails on a ship that deliberately sinks has to have a different outlook on life.

Chris’s contribution was indispensable. He worked with me on every part of the book: characterization, technical details, plotting, and wrote many of the scenes. He vetted the text, edited, and kept me honest.

My name is on the cover, and I take responsibility for all errors and omissions, but this book wouldn’t exist without Chris. Writing can be hard, and sharing the work with a friend improves the quality of the effort, as well as the final product. This book is as much Chris’s as it is mine, and he deserves as much credit as I do for its success.
