ngela walked out with Toby through another door, which led to the DA's office. She hoped that David would leave the courtroom right after, and the media personnel would follow him. So, the area would be clear when Toby and Angela had to go out. And hopefully, that is exactly what happened.
As Angela walked out, she knew Toby wasn't in the right headspace. So, she asked him, "Hey, are you okay? I know that was a lot to take in back there. You do know that this is all being done to actually put the man responsible for Darren's death behind bars."
"Angela, can we go someplace else? I don't want to go back to your place. I need some air," Toby asked.
"Of course. Anytime," Angela replied. As they sat in the car waiting for them outside, Angela asked the driver to take a left to Central Park. While Angela and Toby enjoyed the fresh, misty air of Central Park, they observed boys in their teens ice skating in the skating rink and women and men sharing coffees.
Right at that moment, May called Angela. "Hey, how did it go?" she asked.
"Yeah, it went as we wanted it to. The case wasn't dismissed on the grounds of lack of evidence, so the case went on. Thirty days should be enough time for David to get Alveris on his side again," Angela spoke up.
"Aah, Alveris. So, I've been monitoring all of his activities closely. I have spotted around six men. They are still being identified. I'm sending their profiles over to you in hopes that you might know someone. With that said, I might have found something truly astronomical," May said with a hint of excitement in her voice.
"What is it?" Angela asked in a heartbeat.
"So, our suspicions were right. He is using another company to transport his goods. He's used them twice now," May said without taking time to breathe.
"What? That's brilliant! How did you find out about it?" Angela asked.
"So basically, the middle guy, Simon; Simon has been working with Alveris for decades now. And all of Simon's transportation is handled by him. When Alveris caught David in his web, Simon was the one who genuinely showed sympathy to us and would always have our back when transporting shipments through our channels.
So, I knew I could trust him. I called him up and asked him. He was frozen at first and explained how he couldn't tell us which was fine, to be honest. I wouldn't want him to lose his job for helping us or, worse, get murdered. But he did give me the name of the company," May explained.
"Wait, what did you tell him? Why did you say you needed the info?" Angela asked.
"Oh, I just told him that business was getting bad ever since Alveris broke the contract and since the case was lodged. So, I just wanted to know what's up and if he would be coming back. And that's how I got a few details," May added.
"What did he say to come back?" Angela inquired quickly.
"He said nothing is set in stone. And Alveris could change his mind at any time. He doesn't trust David at the moment. So that's a major drawback. He also said that Alveris had learned of the case and planned to intervene, but David's ex had asked for immunity and protection, so Alveris decided to stay away. He doesn't want anything tracing back to him," May told Angela.
"This is all great news. This is exactly what we wanted. Things are going according to plan. What's the name of the company, and when's the next shipment? We need to call the Feds for a bust operation. What are we waiting for? This is huge. It's a jackpot!" Angela exclaimed.
"So, the company’s name is Trace Transports. It's owned by Jeremy Renshaw. He is a young entrepreneur. He filed for bankruptcy last year until he started his own transport company from a huge inheritance he got from his dead grandfather.
I can already tell he has had to cut corners with the number of loopholes in this story. Anyway, there is, however, a catch to this. We don't know when Alveris is transporting next; what port is he using? Or is he using some other method of transportation? We don't have any details. And I'm sure Simon won't be telling me those details," May explained meekly.
"Hmm, that makes sense. So, we have our work cut out for us. That's our homework. Have you talked to David about this? Does he have any ideas as to where we could start?" Angela asked.
"No, I haven’t gotten around to telling him yet. I was expecting him to meet me at his apartment an hour ago. But he's not here yet. When was the court adjourned?" May asked.
“That’s strange. The court was adjourned an hour and a half ago,” Angela replied.
"Woah. Okay. I'm going to try and contact him again because his driver really likes to not return my calls and disappear into the middle of nowhere, not sticking to schedule," May replied.
"Try calling his driver to see where he is," Angela asked May, more worried than usual now.
"Alright, I'll call him now. Talk to you later," Mary replied to her, also in an agitated voice.
"Yeah, please keep me updated," Angela requested of May.
"Alright, bye."
May tried calling David’s driver, but he wouldn’t respond. One ring after another, and then it would stop ringing. Soon, she lost all connections entirely. The call just wouldn’t go through. May was getting worried. She called on David’s IT expert, Joshua, to access David’s location and see where he was.
"Hey, May, what's up?" Joshua asked in an excited tone. He’d always had a bit of a soft spot for May.
"Hey, Josh. So, listen. I can't get through to David or his driver. They left the Supreme Court around two hours ago and have not made it back home, where they were supposed to meet me. This is not like them.
He either texts me or sends me a pin of his location. Cap, the reason why I'm calling you is to ask you to access David's location. Maybe through his phone? Can you do that?" May asked Joshua. Joshua could sense the tension in her voice and so he didn't beat around the bush.
"Unfortunately, May, I can't access David's location through his phone. If you remember, last year, we installed an anti-tracking bug in his phone so that no one could know his location, his whereabouts, or what he was doing. So, tracking his phone might not be a possibility," Joshua explained to May.
"Oh yeah. What a bummer. Is there anything else that could be done? Because you know the climate is very volatile right now. There are so many people out to get him right now. And we need to be a step ahead of them," May almost pleaded to Joshua.
"Umm, I don't think there's a lot I can do...." Joshua's voice trailed off. "But hey! I can track his car by hacking into their systems. Get me the license plate and the model number right now," Joshua asked May.
"Oh, wait. Yeah, I can get them. That's genius, Josh!" May squealed. Joshua was smiling through the phone.
May quickly messaged David's assistant for the details. And in a jiffy, she replied back. "Okay, Josh, I have the details. It's a black Tesla. The model is 2020. And the license plate is A-2404," May announced.
"Oh, alright. It seems like my work is cut out for me. It's a bit hard to hack into Tesla's format but not... impossible," Joshua claimed.
He got out his laptop and opened up tracking car services. Then he used his hacking skills to open the moderator for the site, which broke the security protocol and gave him free access. This was Joshua's personal best. He did so in under fifteen minutes. And he thought it was going to be hard, but maybe because May was on the other end of the call, that gave him the extra ounce of encouragement. "Alright then, I don't think I can be in the system for long because that would alert the agencies and they might be able to identify me. So, while I am here, I can see that David and his car are held up at some back end alley on 43rd street,” Joshua told May.
“43rd street? What does that even mean? I’m so lost,” May told Josh.
"I mean, do you want me to hack into the internal cameras of the system and see what's happening?" Josh asked May, almost sneakily.
"Wait, what? Can you do that? Then, yes. Of course. Do it!" May yelled.
"Alright, alright. Jeez. It will take me another minute," Josh said.
After a long pause, Josh replied, “I’m in. And you won’t believe what I’m seeing,” Josh stated.
"Wait, what? Is David okay? Is he safe? Is everything fine?" May asked, worried.
“Yeah, yeah. David’s fine. But he’s sitting with Ricardo,” Josh replied.
"He's sitting with Ricardo? That's far from safe! What if Alveris found out about the entire scheme? What if he's about to kill him? Oh my God. I need to go down there," May started to search for her gun.
"No, no, no, May. Their body language is actually calm. They're laughing. I think David is far from danger here; they're even shaking hands," Josh explained.
"That's an interesting turn of events," May said, confused. She stopped looking for her gun. "You think they might be making a deal?" May asked.
"I don't know, maybe. At least we know he's safe. Also, I need to back out of the system now; otherwise, I'll be in danger," Josh said, logging out and deleting all the cookies and cached data.
"Yeah, yeah, that would be enough, Josh. Thank you so much for your effort," May commended him genuinely.
"It was no problem at all," Josh said as they ended the call.
With that said, May sat in her chair and took a deep breath. She now waited for him to come back and also prayed that Joshua was right in his judgment of the situation.
Another hour later, David entered his apartment with a box of pizza in his hand. "Where were you?!" screamed May.
"Relax. Woah. I was just getting pizza. My favorite thing," David calmed her.
"Hmm, that's it? That's all you need to tell me?" May hinted.
“Aha. Sounds like you know something,” David said.
"I know you were just meeting with Alveris in some back end of an alley," May said, smirking.
"Wait? What? How? How do you know that?" David asked, profusely puzzled.
"I asked Josh to hack into your car," May said, smirking again.
"Wow, remind me to never underestimate you," David said as he sat down.
"Oh, come on! I was getting worried. You took so long to get back."
"Yeah. So, two cars started tailing us, and then Alveris texted me to pull over. I asked the driver to pull over and load my gun. But something told me he was just here for a friendly talk," David said.
"So, what happened?" May asked.
"He wanted to know about the case and if it would bring him into the light. I told him it wouldn't and that he didn't need to do anything about it. He did; he wanted to go after the lawyer, but I assured him all was taken care of. I think he bought it. We didn't talk business because he didn't want to. It only confirmed my belief that he has taken his business elsewhere," David recalled.
"And that he has. But before we get into those details, I need to tell Angela you are fine; she's worried sick," May said.
